How to Make a Raspberry Patch 🌼
A tiny embellishment can completely change a piece of clothing. This patch is designed to be stitched once and reused anywhere. Developed during my Studio to Closet— Behind the Make of My Wardrobe journey.
Inspired by my niece and her love of berries, I stitched this for her. Here’s how to make one for yourself!
you’ll need
- PDF Raspberry Design & Color Guide
- fabric scrap (I used a 7×7″ denim square)
- 5″ embroidery hoop
- DMC embroidery floss
- embroidery scissors
- large embroidery needle
- water soluble paper stabilizer
- pins
- iron
Stitches used: Satin · Backstitch · Invisible Whip · Blanket

Start with a test print on regular paper to determine your desired scale. Once the size feels right, print onto water-soluble stabilizer.
Adhere the stabilizer to your scrap fabric. Use a few pins to secure it in place since the adhesive can lift as you work.
Alternatively, if your fabric is light enough, trace the design using a window or lightbox.

STITCH
Gather your threads: reds, pinks, greens. You can intuitively pull what feels right or reference the Color Guide and assign colors based on value (light to dark) for a more dimensional berry.
If you’re using multiple shades, take a moment to lay them out in order. Label if needed to keep things clear, then begin!
Order of Construction:
⋆ Satin stitch each drupelet (those tiny berry circles) to fill the interior.
⋆ Outline each section with a backstitch to define the shape.
⋆ Add a few tiny white stitches for highlights to create that juicy, sun-kissed look.

WASH & PRESS
Once your stitching is complete, remove the fabric from the hoop. Rinse under lukewarm water until all stabilizer residue dissolves.
Let it air dry completely. Press gently to smooth everything out.

APPLIQUÉ
Trim around your raspberry, leaving about a ½–1 inch border (adjust depending on your scale).
Turn the raw edge under slightly and secure the back with an invisible whip stitch in matching thread. And just like that, your patch is ready to go.
Choose a fun, contrasting thread and use a blanket stitch to sew the patch directly onto your chosen garment or textile.
Now you have the world’s most charming little raspberry patch.
